Change of heart

For most of my life, I have HATED yogurt. Seriously, the smell, the goopy texture, the sour taste. Whether I just don't have the tastebuds to deal with it, or I was scarred by a childhood of being forced to eat it with antibiotics. Yogurt has never been my thing.

Claire, on the other hand. Loves it. Can eat it at every meal. So, I've learned to hold my breath, and spoon it up.

Until the last week. See, in an effort to be more frugal and earth friendly, I bought a big two-pound tub of plain whole-milk yogurt, instead of the little cups of YoBaby that I had been giving her. However, she doesn't like it - and really, can you blame her? Plain yogurt instead of peach? vanilla? pear? banana?

So now I've got this tub of yogurt - what's called Amish style - which is very thick, almost like ricotta cheese. I still can't eat it plain, but ...I made a really good dip for veggies - with a big scoop of yogurt, and a generous sprinkle of my favorite spice rub. I used it as the base for a creamy salad dressing. (I thinned it with fat-free milk and a little water and added garlic and onion powders, basil) and I just made my own Tzatziki sauce. That was easy too - grated a 1/4 of a cuke, and sprinkled it with some salt. I put that in a colander to drain a bit. I squeezed it out so it was good and dty, then I added a grated clove of garlic and a pinch of chopped fresh dill.

Oh, and I made a potato salad last night, with half lite mayo and half yogurt.

(It's 3 pts per cup, but I haven't had a whole cup yet.)

Thanks for commenting on my blog! Do your husband and friends play Kayak polo too? I know there is a group that plays in the NYC area.

As for the yogurt. Try blending real fruit into it for Claire. You could puree peaches, or blueberries (strain them after) or just about any other fruit she likes.

I was going to say the same thing about couldn't you get fresh strawberries & toss 'em in the blender with the yogurt?

I like the tzatziki too - my cukes are starting to ripen so I'll be getting back into that. Tried growing my own dill this year too but it just immediately went to seed.

For me, yogurt was an acquired taste...much like beer and broccoli rabe. But with kids, you just never know. J - who is the consumate picky eater - adores yogurt. His sister, who is a much more adventurous eater by nature, doesn't care for it, and I have offered it to her in various forms at least twenty times by now.

Every kid is different, you just work with what you've got.
